It is a generic name for a range  of cantes (styles of songs) involving happy and lively music, such as caracoles,  mirabrás, romeras and alegrías, all of which have generally brief coplas (poetic  compositions, in verse, used as lyrics), and are thought to be related with the  old Cádiz jota. They are cantes festeros (lfeast or party songs, which tend to  be loud and happy) for dancing that became very fashionable in the cafés  cantantes (late nineteenth and early twentieth century establishments serving  drinks that staged performances of singing, playing and dancing). This dance is  characterised by a harmonious swinging of the arms, undulating movements, light  punteados (a kind of percussion using the feet), paso castellano de perfil (a  dance step that is characteristic of cantiñas and alegrías, and is done with  side-on to the audience) and escobillas (section of the dance that includes the  zapateado, a rhythmic combination of sounds made by stepping with the heel, sole  and toe of the foot). The meter of the cantiñas is related to the meter of the  soleá, and both of them are also related to bulerías, or the 12 beat. The  choreography taught will use music from one of the biggest performers/singer of  cantinas El Pinini de Utrera.

Miguel  Vargas"Even though absorbed in his  dancing, he keeps himself completely under control, firm and light at the same  time. Vargas dominates the audience just by slightly arching his pinkie... With  the most varied rhythms, he shows a flamenco without compromises, that puts  together archaic and ageless traditions, with intense and improvised  interpretation". -Rheinische Post

This is only one of many fabulous  acclaims Miguel Vargas earned for his performances in Germany, France, Japan and  Spain, just to mention a few countries. The history of Miguel Vargas begins far  from Europe with his birth in 1975 in Venezuela, son of a university professor  and of a psychologist. The family moves to Germany and the career of his father  takes him all over the world, spending periods in Mexico and Spain. He debuts  like a prodigy child at the early age of six and at the age of twelve he begins  to teach. Since the very beginning he instinctively understands the spirit and  character of Flamenco. After learning the basics of the dance, he develops his  own personal style. "His dance is pure charisma, pure energy, passion,  intensity, personality, technique. pure instinct." Artist of universal soul,  personifies a fusion of cultures, music and styles of dance. Miguel Vargas has  incorporated his modern cosmopolitan character into the pure flamenco dance.  After obtaining a high school degree in 1994, Miguel Vargas begins his career in  Spain, dancing in the most renowned tablao of Seville: Los Gallos. He performs  with artists like Manuela Carrasco and Mario Maya. Along with Mario Maya´s  company, he performed in front of the King and Queen of Spain in the World  Championships of Winter Sports in Granada in 1996. He performs in "Lincoln  Center" of New York, in the Festival of Theater in Avignon and continues with a  tour through France. In 1997 he creates his own company. He dances in Madrid,  New York, in the Halle aux grains of Toulouse and realizes a tour through  Florida. 1998 he takes part in the "Bienal de Flamenco of Seville", the most  prestigious festival of flamenco in the world. At the moment, he continues  presenting his shows in Singapore, Japan, Finland, Norway, Switzerland, Austria,  Greece, Dubai, etc. He has been recorded in CD´s and television, collaborating  with Kiko Veneno and Esperanza Fernández among others. "Miguel Vargas is  synonymous of dreams, dedication, efforts and victories" Today, he is one of the  biggest exponents of the current flamenco dance. As ambassador of the Spanish  culture he has danced in front of monarchs and presidents in the whole world. He  is currently a businessman. He directs the Center of Art and Flamenco of Seville  - institution dedicated to the education and diffusion of the flamenco art,  together with his wife, the singer Esperanza Fernández.

"Flamenco is the  way I express myself, my philosophy of life, not just my work. When I´m dancing,  I reveal my soul. I am Flamenco from the time I get up in the morning until I go  to sleep at night, even when I´m asleep. I dream flamenco. Flamenco is my wife,  my children are flamenco, flamenco is the city where I live and everything I  do", explains Miguel Vargas.
